Hey everyone! I’m so excited about today’s post. 😀 MAC has an array of colored In Extreme Dimension mascaras as a part of its new Work It Out collection. Colored mascaras! Ever thought of trying them? Nope. I for one never did. But when it’s MAC, and a new collection that has no less than SIXTEEN shades to choose from, it’s quite difficult to resist. 😀
The last day I went to Quest Mall, I did think of checking out their collection, but more than half of them were sold out. 🙁 Not losing hope, I hopped online on to Nykaa and glad to find twelve of the shades there! So this time I dared to take a step ahead from my comfort zone, and picked up 5 of these pretty, colorful mascaras. 🙂 The colors being a bright blue, a purple, a brown, a green and a RED! I am so glad I took the courage to buy a red mascara, because I got to try something totally new without looking OTT. 🙂
My Experience with MAC Work It Out In Extreme Dimension Mascaras :
The colors are, I daresay, drop dead gorgeous! Each one of them that I got is so so pretty. I regret not having bought Sweaty Betty, a teal blue, thinking it may look a wee bit too-much on me, given I have never ever tried colored mascaras. But after trying the others out, I think my black lashes would have sailed through with the teal blue just as well as the others. I also wanted to try Cool Down (MAC describes this shade as a bright violet purple), but it was not available online or in-store, so picked up a closer cousin Well-toned instead. 😀
I was so anxious while putting on Heart Rate’s Rising (that’s the red one), but believe me, it is only so subtly noticeable from a distance! Red ain’t a color many of us would try on the eyes, but girl this mascara is such a stunner. Oh and what’s with the names! Each of the names are so in-gym and work-it-out. I love the quirkiness and the energy in the names of each of the products I got from this collection. 😀
I tell you, having black lashes is such a blessing-in-disguise. It’s what all of us Indians are endowed with. Layering the colored mascaras over black lashes help in keeping the color at a subtle minimum, without literally screaming or yelling for attention. 🙂 Unless of course you want the colors to show up as-it-is. Even in that case, MAC has your back in Muscle Tee, a white mascara that could act as a base for the rest other colors. I only wanted a some drama and playful colors on my lashes, so I chose to leave behind Muscle Tee. 😛
The green one, Spin & Twist is a darker shade. A green with quite a generous amount of grey undertones. It’s what appears as a blackish green, MAC describes it as Forest Green. On my black lashes, two coats of Spin & Twist is a less intense color. However out in the sun, this green looks so pretty and I love the toned-down green lashes look. 🙂 You know I have this thing with Green? I couldn’t pass on without picking a green!
Well-toned is a “rich plum purple”, on my lashes it is more plum than purple. I wish it was a little more purple. I love the royal color and really wanted it to show on my lashes. But Well-toned is again a very subtle version of the color. Subtle on my black lashes that is. Since Cool Down was not available, so I zeroed down on Well-toned. Purple belongs to the blue family, and plum is rage these days, so Well-Toned is a shade most of us would carry off pretty well. 🙂 Again, this color is quite prominent in broad daylight or a place widely lit across, less so in our regular indoor blue lights.
When it comes to eye colors, how many of us could resist a blue? So I got the blue mascara in Hold For 10, and after checking a few swatches online, I knew I had to get this one. 😀 I was a little apprehensive if it would be too bold a color that I could carry, but this is just the right dose of hue that I was so desperately looking for in this collection! Not too stark, not too low-key either.
This bright, cobalt blue shows up in a single layer, and with two layers I feel a Goddess. 😀 I love, love how beautiful this color looks on my lashes. And I don’t even feel or look out of my regular comfort zone. Although unconventional, I feel it’s a color I could easily carry off with panache, without feeling weird or otherwise. Not that I’d feel uncomfy in any of the colors that I chose, but Hold For 10 (whoa look at the name 😀 ) is the brightest of them all. Perhaps Cool Down would have a similar pop of color on my lashes but I’d never know.
And these In Extreme Dimension Mascaras are so aptly named! They give an amazing volume to the lashes, two coats is all you need for all that drama. I love how despite imparting so much volume to my lashes, they don’t feel heavy on the delicate flurries. 🙂 These mascaras even don’t clump up and the applicator is so amazing. It efficiently disburses the color uniformly across the lashes, separating and curling them diligently. 🙂
And oh the packaging. The mascara bottles look so much like bowling pins. 😀 Plump and tall, with “MAC” stamped across the body in the shade of the mascara. So playful, so pretty. 🙂 I even love the black-and-white chequered boxes that house the mascaras, with the colored flap and the shade name at the neon-green end of the box. The packaging has such a retro vibe to it with a modern twist. Love the Work-It-Out theme, like totally. 😀
A brown mascara is a safe bet if you want to transition from the regular black mascaras without attempting to look different. So I got Squat It, Sugar. It hardly ever shows up on my black lashes, unless I’m out in the daytime or glaring lights. It is barely noticeable. A safe bet for regular office-goers. It takes a Muscle Tee for colors like Well Toned and Squat It, Sugar to show up on the lashes. 🙂
Check out how these look on me :
I’m wearing four of the MAC Work It Out In Extreme Dimension Mascaras here. You can clearly demarcate Hold For 10 (blue) and Heart Rate’s Rising (red) on the upper and lower lashes of the left eye. I have Spin & Twist (green) and Well-Toned (plum purple) on the upper and lower lashes of the right eye. While the shade Spin & Twist (green) is quite noticeable on the upper lashes, Well-Toned is much less distinguishable in the pictures.
I haven’t photographed Squat It, Sugar on my lashes. All I can say is it is even less noticeable than Well-Toned on my lashes. So you can almost picture it out. 🙂 However I do have a hand swatch of 3 colors :
Product Description :
Now in 16 bold-as-you-dare shades. This lightweight whipped formula adds dense volume, extends length and creates curl, while conditioning for softness and flexibility. The gigantic moulded brush stores the right amount of mascara in three reservoirs for the maximum amount of mascara with each stroke, while keeping the lashes from clumping together. The tip of the brush allows for precision in accentuating lower lashes and small hairs at the corners of the eye. Extreme dimension that won’t smudge, clump or flake. Special packaging features mascara tubes colour-matched to the product shade inside and graphic black and white sleeves with neon stripes.
A Final Word:
I’m totally thumbs up for this no-brainer colorful collection that MAC has launched with Work It Out. There are fewer lipsticks, mostly neutral ones to pair up with the bright eyes. There are Chromagraphic pencils and Quicktrick sticks. And mascaras in every possible color!
I’m absolutely drooling over the MAC Work It Out In Extreme Dimension mascaras. 😀 I never imagined myself sporting a red mascara or even a purple one, but here I am, sporting and loving each one of them. Thanks to MAC for urging me to dare some colors, and I’m so glad I did. The packaging is great, and the mascaras excellent. 🙂
The thing with colored mascaras is that, they instantly brighten your face and transform your look. All the colors that I got, show up better in daylight than indoors. Hold For 10 and Heart Rate’s Rising look gorgeous even indoors. If you are feeling a little experimental, MAC gives you the perfect opportunity to totally nail it now. Embrace your inner goddess, play with a few colors and thoroughly work it all out! 😀
My Rating : 5/5
I want to give it a big 10 on 5 for making us Indian women break some stereotypes and brace up some colors. While most of us prefer a neutral, no-makeup look, MAC shatters every notion of being uncomfortable in colors with its Work It Out launch. Perhaps this is what makes MAC stand out through all these years! And thanks Nykaa, for bringing it all at our doorsteps. 🙂
(Oh and I hope this is MAC’s best collection of the year, because I’m running so low on my finances now. 😛 MAC is only releasing awesome collections one after the other. A tempted me falling hard for each one of them. I’m still pondering over Sweaty Betty, yeah still. 😀 That teal blue darling has stolen my heart and I keep wishing I got that one too!)
So which one is your pick? 😀
